Special and General List application guidelines

The organization must be based within the United Kingdom. The Trustees do not require applicants to use a special application form, but suggest that the following guidelines be used:

Applications should be no longer than four A4 sides, and should incorporate a short (half page) summary

In addition applications should include a detailed budget for the project and the applicant's most recent audited accounts. If those accounts show a significant surplus or deficit of income, please explain how this has arisen.

Applications should:

  1. State clearly who they are, what they do and whom they seek to help.

  2. Give the applicant's status, e.g., registered charity.

  3. Confirm that the organisation has a Child Protection Policy (where appropriate) and that Criminal Record Bureau checks are carried out on all staff working with children

  4. Describe clearly the project for which the grant is sought answering the following questions: What is the aim of the project and why is it needed? What practical results will it produce? How many people will benefit from it? What stage has the project reached so far? How will you ensure that it is cost-effective?

  5. If the request is for a salary, enclose a job description.

  6. If the request is for medical research, please see separate guidelines.

  7. Explain how the project will be monitored, evaluated and, how its results will be disseminated.

  8. State what funds have already been raised for the project, and name any other sources of funding applied for.

  9. Explain where on-going funding (if required) will be obtained when the Charity's grant has been used.

  10. If the request is for revenue funding for a specific item, please state the amount sought.

  11. Give the names and addresses of two independent referees.

Please keep the application as simple as possible and avoid the use of technical terms, acronyms and jargon. Please do not send videos or CD Roms.

What will happen to my application?

Special or General List

Applications can be submitted at any time during the year. A letter acknowledging the application will be sent within two weeks of receipt.

Summaries of applications which are within the charity's objects and current policy are sent to the Trustees.

If there is sufficient support for an application, applicants will be asked to provide confirmation in writing that all staff working with the client group concerned have had appropriate checks through the Criminal Records Bureau. One of the Charity's Visitors will also be asked to prepare a report which usually involves a visit.

Applications for medical research projects are subject to independent peer review.

Trustees meet quarterly in March, June, September and December to consider applications. Applications must be received at least 8 weeks prior to a meeting in order to be considered at the next meeting.

Applicants whose appeals have been considered at those meetings will be informed in writing of the Trustees' decision within two weeks of the meeting.

Applicants who are unsuccessful are required to wait a minimum of six months from the date of notification before reapplying. Please note that whilst the appeal might fit the Trustees' criteria, owing to the high volume of appeals, not all applicants will be successful.

Applicants whose appeals are outside the Charity's objects and/or current policy will be notified within four weeks of receipt of application.

The Charity reserves the right to share the details of grant applications with other grant makers unless the applicant expressly indicates otherwise when applying.

Please note that all grants offered for the purchase, construction or refurbishment of buildings, or for the purchase of land, are subject to acceptance of our Terms and Conditions of Accepting a Capital Grant. These must be signed by the organisation’s Chair of Trustees and its Treasurer or Finance Director. We strongly recommend that you read these BEFORE submitting your application to the Charity.
